Waste Management Co-Founder to Address Graduates

Industrial Arts Institute (IAI), a division of Moran Iron Works (MIW), is honored to announce the key note speaker for the 3rd Cohort of students of the Comprehensive Industrial Welding Course CIW 100, Mr. Larry Beck, Co-Founder of Waste Management.
Mr. Beck started his vocation as a professional truck driver in 1946. He then founded Atlas Disposal in 1953, and went on to co-found Waste Management in 1971. Larry has worked to develop and create Blockbuster Video, Boston Market, Burnham Broadcasting, Birchwood Construction and L & N Properties. He also served his country in the United States Army Air Force during 1945 and 1946.  He has served his communities as the South Chicago Suburban Chamber of Commerce – President, South Suburban Waste Management Association – President, Alma College – Alma, MI. – Board Chairman, Monmouth College – Monmouth, IL. Board Member, and McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital, Petoskey, MI, Board Member. Mr. Beck has received the following recognitions/awards: Waste Industry Hall of Fame – Washington, D. C., Honorary Doctor of Law Degree – from Alma College and Monmouth College. Larry married Nancy Genie Beck in 1955 and they have 3 children 12 grandchildren 2 great grandchildren.

Mr. Beck will address 13 new graduates that have completed a 15 week course of study with intense hands on training from seasoned Certified Welding Educators (CWE) in multiple disciplines in welding and fabricating. All students will graduate as certified welders.

Most know him for the generous contributions he has made to the communities of Northern Michigan, or as one of founders of Waste Management, but I know him as a mentor, trusted advisor, and one who understands the value of skilled tradespeople.”

The Industrial Arts Institute graduation ceremony for Cohort 3 is Friday, August 14, 2015 at 3:30pm at the school.
