The Industrial Arts Institute is proud to announce the launch of its new Art & Design Department, a fresh initiative created to bring accessible, hands‑on creative programming to residents across northeast Michigan. This department is brand new — a direct response to growing community interest in ceramics, sculpture, and visual arts.
The first major investment powering this launch was made possible through the Awakon Federal Credit Union Community Grant, which funded the purchase of a new professional‑grade kiln and furniture kit. This equipment is the foundation of our ceramics programming and will support community workshops for years to come.

A New Department Built for Community Creativity
The Art & Design Department begins with Raku Pottery, a friendly, three‑week beginner ceramics series led by artist Joe Donna. Participants learn basic techniques, work with their hands, and complete a handcrafted ceramic piece — often their first creative project in years.
As described in the grant summary:
“Every participant completes a handcrafted ceramic piece, gaining confidence, creative expression, and a meaningful connection to the local arts community.”
This new department expands IAI’s mission beyond industrial training, offering a welcoming space for residents to learn, create, and connect.
Awakon’s Grant Directly Funded the Kiln Purchase
The Awakon Community Grant enabled IAI to purchase the kiln needed to launch ceramics programming.
This kiln provides the firing capacity needed for community classes, Raku experiences, and future workshops. It is the essential tool that allows the new Art & Design Department to operate.
Expanding Creative Opportunities in 2026
With the kiln in place and Awakon’s support behind the launch, IAI will expand its new department’s offerings to include:
- Summer 2026 Raku Workshop
- Fall 2026 & Spring 2027 Intro to Clay Arts Series
- Future workshops will be offered across a diverse array of art mediums as the department continues to grow.
These programs will help establish a year‑round arts enrichment hub in Onaway — something our region has never had before.
