Onaway, MI: Industrial Arts Institute is holding its 2nd Annual Regional High School Welding Competition on April 20, 2018. Seventy-two High School students from ten area schools will compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in 3 different welding process categories.  Competition starts at 8:30 AM and concludes at 1:30 PM with opportunities to win cash awards, scholarships and equipment.  Students will compete in Shielded Metal Arc (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc (GMAW-G), and Flux Cored Arc (FCAW).  All participants will receive a scholarships to attend the Industrial Arts Institute’s Comprehensive Structural Plate & Pipe Welding Course once they have graduated from High School.  The next class starts August 6th, 2018 and then again in January 14TH, 2019.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the High School Welding Competition at the Industrial Arts Institute again this year”, states Mike Mehan, Institute Lab Department Chair and Certified Welding Educator (CWE) & Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).  “We have created an exciting and challenging competition that should highlight the high school welding programs and recognize the student talent in Northern Michigan”.

High School Welding programs from the following schools are planning to participate: Cheboygan Area Schools, Sault Area Career Center, Char-Em ISD-Pellston & East Jordan Public Schools, Alpena High School, Wexford- Missaukee Tech Center, Montcalm Area Career Center, Industrial Arts Institute/ Greater Michigan Construction Academy – Northern Michigan Campus, Mio-Ausable High School and Mecosta-Osceola Career Center. Corporate Industry specialist from Yukon Mfg. Corporation, Superior Fabrication Corporation, LLC and Carmeuse- Calcite Operations will serve as competition judges for the day.
