Onaway, MI: Industrial Arts Institute is holding its 1st Annual Regional High School Welding Competition on April 21, 2017. 56 High School students from 9 area schools will compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in 3 categories. Competition starts at 8:30 AM and concludes at 1:30 PM with opportunities to win cash awards, scholarships and equipment.
Students will compete in Shielded Metal Arc (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc (GMAW-G), and Flux Cored Arc (FCAW). All participants will receive a scholarships to attend IAI’s 15 week CIW 100 Course.
“We are thrilled with the participation level for our first event”, states Mike Mehan, Institute Lab Department Chair and Certified Welding Educator (CWE) & Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). “We have created an exciting and challenging competition that should highlight the high school CTE programs and recognize the student talent in Northern Michigan”.
Schools participating are: Cheboygan Area Schools, Hillman Community High School, Sault Area High School and Career Center, Pellston High School, East Jordan Public Schools, Alpena High School, Career Technical Center – Wexford –Missaukee ISD, Montcalm Area ISD, Greater Michigan Construction Academy – Northern Michigan Campus. Industry specialist from Alpena and Kincheloe will serve as judges for the day.
The public is welcome to attend. Sponsors for the event include; Lincoln Electric, Char-Em ISD, Purity, Ellenberger Lumber, CarQuest, Moran Iron Works, and Industrial Arts Institute.
