Welding & Fabrication Instructor

Opening Date:  July 2020
Job Title:   Welding Instructor; CWI preferred or ability to pass AWS CWI within 6 months to one year
Location:   Onaway, MI – Industrial Arts Institute
Job Type:   Full time/ Salary range $55K to $57K
Benefits:  Medical, Dental, Vision STD, LTD, 3 weeks of vacation and 401K plans

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Instruct students in subject areas of expertise
  • Co-teach where possible to learn and broaden area of expertise
  • Participate on the Curriculum Development Team for the purposes of continuous improvement
  • Recommend instructional resources for use in the classroom to Curriculum Development Team
  • Plan prepare and deliver instructional activities
  • Create lesson plans and modify accordingly throughout the year
  • Maintain grade books – migrate to virtual format (Orbund). Computer skills required
  • Grade projects, homework, quizzes, and LAB work and prepare grades for student viewing in a timely manner and with attention to the student’s skill and ability
  • Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans
  • Mentor students to success, retention and where required, on an individual basis
  • Observe and evaluate student’s performance regarding their abilities
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by instilling team atmosphere
  • Advise students on how to achieve their goals
  • Plan and prep all LAB materials for maximum student education experience
  • Effectively and efficiently requisition all materials, equipment and teaching supplies required for instruction
  • Instill by example “lifelong learning”
  • Maintain all curriculum, quizzes, and checklists in shared drive utilizing computer knowledge and skill sets
  • Follow operational policies and procedures set by Institution and Board of Directors

Minimum Requirements:

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience actively working in the Welding/Metal Fabrication industry and/or 4-year Degree Welding Technology or Engineering
  • Former teaching and/or on the job supervising, training or mentoring experience preferred
  • American Welding Society – Certified Welding Inspector credential preferred or the ability to pass testing within 6 months to a year
  • Certifications in Welding
  • Successful background check

Career Pathways

Career in welding requires problem-solving skills, hand-eye coordination, and effective communication skills. The more education and skill training you receive, the more success you may experience.

Understanding the growing business of welding and the ever expanding technologies is crucial; as is a willingness to relocate wherever the job requires.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, welders can generate anywhere between $11.82 and $24.94 an hour. The median wage for a welder is $17.45. The number of job prospects is expected to increase by six percent over the course of the next seven years.

Information related to employment opportunities will be posted and updated on a regular basis and is made available to students and alumni at the Industrial Arts Institute Complex or by contacting the Student Services Department.  Additionally, every IAI graduate will be placed on an e-mail listing and will be provided with career opportunities as we become aware of them.

 Our goal is to expose students and alumni to the industry and ensure they are employed upon completion of our programs. These resources will provide support to our students and alumni so that they can explore job opportunities that may lead them to a successful careers.
