  • Final Integration Project: Salvation Army "Big Red Kettle"

Students experienced a 15 week course of study with intense hands on training.  The class completed a final integration project to test their skills and competencies in welding and fabricating by partnered with the Petoskey, MI branch of the Salvation Army to craft a “Big Red Kettle” for the philanthropic Christian organization.  Twenty-three students, under the guidance of welding educators, fabricated the kettle out of mild steel. The design and engineering of the kettle has been administered at Moran Iron Works (MIW). The finished project will stand 7ft. tall and 7ft. round with a weight of approximately 2000lbs.

STUDENT & EMPLOYER TESTIMONIALS

“Coming to Industrial Arts Institute is one of the best decisions I have made. I was unsure of my reception since I am a Deaf woman going into the male dominated field of welding. I needn’t have worried. IAI has become family and the faculty and staff gone above and beyond my expectations to help ensure that I succeed.”

Employer Testimonial:

“Trevor Mindelli has been able to step into the welding and fabrication department here at Genzink Steel because of the training that he received from IAI. Trevor has been here roughly a year and is doing an outstanding job. The baseline training that he received has helped him make a career out of welding. IAI does an outstanding job, working with the students and teaching them the skilled trade. They also care about the students and want to see them succeed. It seems that welders are a dying breed and IAI is moving in the right direction to change that, by making welding fun. Genzink Steel has had a relationship with IAI for a few years now, and it has been an extremely successful one. We know we can rely on IAI giving us students that have the skill, training and will to do what it takes to be a welder. “
